Manchester Football Riot Caused By a Faulty TV Screen

Manchester City was ablaze with riots yesterday May 15, 2008 after a TV screen, that had been set up for the viewing benefit of non-ticket holding fans, had failed to work 15 minutes before kick off. The UEFA Cup Final resulted in a 2-0 loss for the Scottish Rangers, which only irritated the problem more.

David Beckham Plays in Edmonton, Alberta

DAVID BECKHAM David Beckham was in Canada today to play a tribute game against the Vancouver Whitecaps FC at the Commonwealth Stadium in Edmonton, Alberta May 13, 2008. Despite mustering an assist for the LA Galaxy, Beckham couldn’t secure a victory. Losing 2-1.

Despite the loss, Beckham and other Galaxy teammates enjoyed the celebration of more than 35,000 fans cheering them on.

Beckham’s desire to build up a soccer hype in North America has proven difficult, especially in hockey loving Canada - having a tribute game in Edmonton was therefore said to be strategic in building a Western Canadian fan-base.

My Favorite Sports Memory

Looking back, my favorite memory was watching the French National Football Team win the 2000 Euro Cup. I was living in France at the time and watched it live on the TV at a friends house. France was playing Italy in their final round. The game remained 0-0 for a long time until after Italy scored a goal. With only a minute left we all thought it was over until France miraculously score with only 33 seconds left! The game when into overtime and France scored the winning goal. It was a very exciting moment. Especially during the walk home seeing everyone celebrating in the streets.

You can watch the match here and see for yourself.

Funny World Football Video

Football is different around the world. Well, maybe not that different. But this video seems to think there is. It compares the game of soccer as it is played throughout the world. Very funny.

Nike Commercial: Good Verses Evil

Dude, I was kind of scared watching this commercial from Nike. The commercial shows some of the worlds best football players matching against the forces of evil. Not exactly sure why they were playing against the devil?

Canada Lose To USA 6-0

I’m a little upset today that Team Canada Women’s lost to that United States 6-0. Of course the scoring leader for the US was the infamous Natasha Kai

10 May 2008: Carli Lloyd (USA) (11) avoids tackles by Candace Chapman (CAN) (9) and Kara Lang (CAN) (15) while Rhian Wilkinson (CAN) (7) waits. The United States Women's National Team defeated the Canada Women's National Team 6-0 at RFK Stadium in Washington, DC in a women's international friendly soccer match.

Natasha Kai had already scored two goals, and when another ball went off her foot into the back of the net, the reality of her accomplishment hit home.

It was the first career hat trick for Kai, who led the U.S. women’s soccer team to a 6-0 win against Canada in a friendly at RFK Stadium on Saturday.

“My mind was just like, ‘Oh. My. Goodness.’ I’m still kind of shocked,” Kai said.

Soccer Corruption Ignorance in Asia

World FootballEdward Thangarajah wrote an interesting article called “Corruption and match-fixing menacing Asian soccer.” You can read the article here. The only problem I had with his observances was the level of ignorance. Asian soccer has always been plagued with corruption - game fixing by paying key players. I mean all you have to do is offer allot of money to a player who would gain less by winning. In soccer it seems that even their injuries are planned.

I’m not trying to be mean, but I would be very surprised if the Beijing Olympics went without any underhanded payouts.

North Korean - Postpone Olympic Football Qualifying Match

Can there ever be an Olympic Game where North Korea isn’t complaining about something?

Pyongyang - North Korea

Today it was announced that North Korean Football Association vice president Son Kwang-ho visited the AFC Office in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia to discuss postponing their qualifying match against South Korea in Seoul. There was no reason given to extend the match.

The Koreas have been at war with each other since the 50’s. It’s time to let football be football without the politics.
